Character [text] Limit

Is there a character limit on writing a background for a character?
Also, what is the character limit on parchment & in a codex?

@history does not have a set character limit, but if you want us to reference them (which is done from time to time when appropriate, believe it or not,) it helps to keep it concise and clear.

Some writeable items may have character limits, since there seems to be a (possibly vestigial) setting for them, but after taking a cursory look it seems that most of them don't currently reference it.
