I personally don't see a reason for a weapon to degrade completely to the point where it just shatters into uselessness. Through regular upkeep and care, many metals have the potential to last for decades or even centuries.

I agree. Copper, tin, and iron are basic elements, and cannot readily be broken down outside of the heat and pressure of a star. Even after the most grievous damage to a weapon, the metal can always be reworked, and then the metal comes out stronger, not weaker. This, in fact, is how steel was primarily formed before the advent of blast furnaces. To set a limited number of repairs is stupid.
