(For the curious, there's a tar process and gzip process that turn a many-multi-GB into a significantly smaller file.) By its nature it's very CPU and disk intensive.

It's a lot happier now but also takes a lot longer to finish which has other potential downsides, so I'll continue to try and find a happy medium.

Sounds like there's a dump, a tar, and then gzip. I'm presuming the game pauses during the dump, resumes when the dump is complete, and right after resuming the tar'ing and gzipping occur.

These last two steps are ridiculously cpu intensive, which is (presumably) the reason for the wonderful lag we experience after backup. Is there anyway you can look into a capping cpu usage for the compression. Other workarounds may be feasible as well. For instance, you could drop the multi-GB dump onto another network device for dedicated compression purposes.

For instance:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc280384.aspx

Thanks greatly. (I almost died in after-backup lag the other day)

We are currently evaluating the possibility of scheduling regular "office hours" where a GM will be on-duty for several blocs of time a week, from two to three hours at a time, to assist with player concerns. This would be an opportunity to directly question the staff about bugs, storylines, administrative or other issues. "Appointments" would be on a first-come, first-served basis. The questions:

A) Do players feel that they and other players would take advantage of this kind of face-time with members of the staff?

B) What times of the week would be most useful for this kind of program to take place? Initial thoughts would be to have two weekday blocs (one during the day, one at night) and one weekend bloc per week, with the specific times changing each week to accommodate different players' schedules.

Can you guys fix this so that it's actually worth rolepoints? As it currently stands you use this option for 500 rolepoints to bump a character up a slot. Can you make it so you can actually exchange the character order of one slot to another, like slot five to slot one for example?

As it currently stands it's pretty useless and misleading. :(

This is how it is now:

Code:

Your current characters:

1=>Char1
2=>Char2
3=>Char3
4=>Char4
5=>Char 5
Which character would you like to move up? Please type the name, not the number.

And this is how it should be:

Code:

Your current characters:

1=>Char1
2=>Char2
3=>Char3
4=>Char4
5=>Char5
Which character would you like to move? Please type the name, not the number.

And...

Code:

Your current characters:

1=>Char1
2=>Char2
3=>Char3
4=>Char4
5=>Char5
Which slot would you like to move this character to?
This will bump all other characters down a place. Please type the number,
not the character.

Pl0x fix.

Thankies.

I noticed we can't reply to that thread and also, that I can't even quote anything in the Staff area so I'm going to ask here.

 For clarification, since the issue has come up a number of times in the past few days, entering commands repeatedly in order to gain some advantage during periods of lag is not allowed, and will be considered on the same level as bug abuse.

I saw this and I'm wondering... I often just hit up and enter to see how many seconds are left in the roundtime for an action...because sometimes it seems much longer than the <x> seconds it normally takes Yes, I am obsessive in that during periods of lag I count the "You are in the middle of something" message because that's my way of assuring myself the game is STILL up...it's just being a pain in the rump! It's sorta my way of checking how responsive the game is to my input. It's also a pretty bad habit for me to click the compass repetitively just to get around because I know I want to go east a million paces before I see the southwest hairpin turn and blah. I know, I'm the picture of patience but I imagine I'm not the only one. Does the above quoted statement apply to these situations?

Recently several people I know have been making their way back to the Eternal City. A close friend and me get together to play TEC sometimes, however I have found myself unable to log in anymore as we have been deemed the same person by IP. My IP address goes back and forth from here and my house, and his is always the same, as I have a laptop and it is a lot easier for me to travel. Both of the accounts are over 10 years old, we have both had paid skotos accounts at one point or another, with different billing information. Is there any way to undo this, and is it against the free account terms to play from the same internet connection?

The Eternal-City is a very complex game and along the years many things have been added or changed and it can be frustrating for players to find all of the information they need without having to search the forums extensively. This thread will be designated to document past and new changes that dictate how the game functions along with a few other useful bits.

If you feel some information is lacking, or needs to be updated, please send me a private message on these forums and I will make the appropriate changes. This is not a thread for discussion. A thread will be created for discussion.

Detailed below will be:

Account System
Administrative System
Training System
Skill System
However: 'Homo' is not a curse word, particularly when the sentence in which it was used was: "My wife is a giant homo."
I appreciate the thought and all, but Nowhere is rather boring.
